Further update July 2016

A year later and I know what's wrong with my blood, but we never did quite figure out why. It is what it is, and I've been working to get better. A baby aspirin every day, more exercise, losing weight, becoming a pescatarian, and we go on. I may have had a TIA. I may be at risk for more. But what I've done in the last year is AGAIN lose weight--this time 15 pounds from the high I was at, and I'm on the way to lose another 5 before classes start in the fall.

I'm feeling better, and more alert, but I also know that the mind-body connection is complicated. Yes, I may have had memory problems due to health issues, but distraction is also a problem. A short retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani showed me that away from distractions, including the Internet, texting, and reminders of the dozens of things I could do any one day helped me focus and engage and feel grounded.

I'm off to a week in Santa Fe for more writing time and focus time. And hopefully continuing a healthy balance of exercise and good food.
